Massage Therapy Laws

If you are a massage therapist or massage therapy student considering opening your own practice there are many laws that you are going to have to think about. For some reason, many people that start massage therapy practices fail to inform themselves about any applicable laws. However, it is absolutely necessary to the success of your business and safety of your clients to make sure that you do whatever is necessary to protect them. To help to better understand the process we have put together some great tips below.

Perhaps the first thing that you will have to do before opening a massage therapy business is become a certified massage therapist. Depending on which state you live in there will be different ways of going about this. However, the majority of states these days recognize a nationalized certification test. In order to take this test you will have to have graduated from an accredited massage therapy school. Once you have done this you will be eligible to write the certification tests. Once you have passed the certification tests, you will then be certified to practice as massage therapists in the state you took the test in. If you decide that you want to move states, you will not be required to rewrite the test as long as that specific state recognizes the national certification tests. If they do, then you will only be required to register for certification in the state and not be required to rewrite the test. However, if the state you decide to work in does not recognize these tests, you will be required to complete any testing that that state required in order to become a certified massage therapist. There are different laws that apply to massage therapists in different states, but all states require you to be a registered, certified massage therapist in order to charge money for your services.

The first thing that you are going to have to do is look into any laws that apply to insuring your business. Of course, it will be a good idea for your business to be insured; however there might be certain laws that apply to massage therapy businesses. There may also be certain laws that apply to having a massage therapy business at home. Of course, these laws will vary from state to state so you will have to check the laws for insuring a massage therapy clinic in your city. There may also be some laws that apply to the actually way that you operate your business. For example, there may be certain procedures that you must follow in accordance to your states laws. These are things that you are going to want to check up on before opening and operating your business. Your state might also require you to make employees that are certified to work in the massage therapy field and you will also want to look in to that as well.
