Breema Bodywork
Breema bodywork is different from massage in that it's not designed to fix a problem, relieve pain or heal an ailment. Massage therapists spend time finding the trouble spots and working on those. With Breema, the philosophy is vastly different. It's considered a non-diagnostic practice, in which the practitioners start by assuming that your body is as it should be. They believe that each body contains within itself the means to balance its systems and heal any problems, and that Breema only supports the body in its efforts to heal itself.
Breema bodywork is frequently referred to as non-judgmental, because there is no judgment about what areas need help or extra work, the body is is viewed as whole and the Breema movements are designed to support the harmony that already exists. A combination of touch to nurture the body, with some movements that are similar to some massage therapies, stretches to relieve tension and movements that focus on rhythm and flow are used to help support the balance of the physical, mental and emotional selves.
Breema Bodywork practitioners don't manipulate the body by pushing and pulling. It's a gentle technique that doesn't use muscular force. Rather, the weight of the practitioner's body is used to move the subject's body. Often the two are entwined together during stretches, which can make the movements seem strange at first to someone not used to such closeness during typical massage. But the gentle, nurturing nature of the bodywork quickly allows the recipient's body to relax and accept the movements and the closeness.
There are Nine Principles of Harmony that form the philosophy of Breema Bodywork, each once describing an aspect or philosophy of the practice. Some of the key points are the belief that when the mind, body and spirit are in balance, there's simply no room within a person for pain and discomfort. The lack of judgment during Breema bodywork is a unique belief that allows the recipient to be more comfortable in that nurturing environment. Lack of force and lack of need to either hurry or pause are stressed. Flowing with the natural rhythm of our lives and energy is said to eliminate the need for either, allowing us to stay in balance and stay well.
The uniquely gentle and calm practice of Breema bodywork, though not designed to find problems and fix them, can promote health and well being by supporting the body as it is. This type of bodywork rewards the subject with increased flexibility, overall relaxation, comfort and a sense of general well-being.
