The main goal of neuromuscular therapy is to reduce neuromuscular pain by eliminating the causes. The main methods that are used to achieve this include massage therapy, stretching, home care, and flexibility. The basic idea of neuromuscular therapy is to encourage the relief of muscular pain by focusing on the balancing of the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.

The actual technique of neuromuscular therapy is quite basic from a massage therapists standpoint. The basic technique is the changing to pressure levels that are applied to affected muscle areas. Much like traditional massage therapy techniques, neuromuscular therapy utilizes the fingers, hands, knuckles, and elbows. This is the reason that this technique is something that a massage therapist usually performs; however many other medical health professionals perform neuromuscular therapy as well. After pressure is applied for a certain amount of time, lactic acid will be released from that particular muscle. Once this has happened, the muscle should be able to receive the appropriate amount of oxygen and blood flow to work properly. This is the technique that relieves the pain from the affected muscle area. Some people will experience pain from the pure pressure that is applied to their muscles. However, this is only temporary and should go away in 24 to 48 hours. If a client is experiencing pain after the initial 48 hours, they should definitely contact a medical doctor.
